Microsoft Power BI continues to be enhanced with new features allowing you to get better insightful information that your company can use for strategic decisions.  One of the latest features is Copolit.  This post will discuss what Microsoft Copilot in Power BI means for your business, data, and reporting future.

Microsoft Power BI (Business Intelligence) has already been established as the premier analytical reporting and data-gathering tool in the industry. Earlier this year, Microsoft was named a leader in the 2023 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Analytics and BI Platforms.  Microsoft has also been positioned furthest to the right for Completeness of Vision, and highest in the Ability to Execute in the Magic Quadrant for the fifth consecutive year. How do you make it better? Simple, make it more user-friendly, powerful, and yet easier to use.

Microsoft has begun adding Copilot to many of its products and Power BI is no exception. Copilot is an advanced AI (Artificial Intelligence) that allows the user to build reports and harness their data simply by asking Copilot questions. Copilot can and will write complex DAX (Data Analysis Expression Code) as well as build out entire dashboards in Power BI. Using Copilot allows the end user to start the process of building extremely data-rich analysis with little time and effort. One can simply ask Copilot to show them key factors that have impacted profit margin and Copilot will in fact make a detailed analysis and generate actionable reporting on the data it is given.

Copilot in Power BI utilized the power of large language models at every layer to help users get more done and create more value from their data. Using Copilot, you can simply describe the visuals and insights you’re looking for, and Copilot will do the rest. Users can create and tailor reports in seconds, generate and edit DAX calculations, create narrative summaries, and ask questions about their data, all in conversational language. With the ability to easily tailor the tone, scope, and style of narratives and add them seamlessly within reports, Power BI can also deliver data insights even more impactfully through easy-to-understand text summaries.

Copilot, while very powerful at this time, is still being developed and continually improved. It is limited of course to the data that is provided in the data model. One must understand that a well-designed and built dashboard is dependent on an equally well-built data model. Power BI teamed with Copilot lessens the time requirement to build actionable data-driven dashboards. Users have been given a very large head start on the use of DAX to write complex computations utilizing Copilot as the very powerful tool to help and potentially fully create their reporting needs. Power BI has been a revolution in data analysis, its power has been unequaled and the addition of Copilot will allow its users to see farther in their data than ever before.
