As a Business Analyst or Test Lead, creating papers for your Microsoft Azure DevOps Test Plans might be daunting. In this article, we will understand Microsoft Azure DevOps Test Plans module and its operation. Further, we will learn how to document test results quickly.

Microsoft Azure Test Plans and Microsoft Azure DevOps

Microsoft Azure Test Plans offers robust and effective tools that empower every team member to drive quality and collaboration across the development process. This test management solution is user-friendly and browser-based that offers all the necessary capabilities for user acceptance testing, planned manual testing, exploratory testing. It can also gather feedback from stakeholders.

Microsoft Azure DevOps (ADO) is an excellent location for your Quality Assurance team to develop Test Plans for a particular project. By incorporating your Testing Team into the Azure DevOps platform, you can leverage your ADO project as a single source of truth.

Benefits of Microsoft Azure Test Plans

1. Test on any platform

Microsoft Azure Test Plans web portal allows you to access all manual testing features using any supported browser. Using an intuitive, browser-based interface that users can access from all popular browsers on any device allows you to build and execute manual tests.

2. Rich diagnostic data gathering

During manual testing, you can collect comprehensive diagnostic data using the web-based Test Runner and Test Runner client. It comprises test impact information for the programs that are testes, an image action log, screenshots, code coverage, screen recordings and IntelliTrace traces. All bugs created during testing automatically include this data, making it easy for engineers to replicate and address the issues.

3. End-to-end traceability

Microsoft Azure DevOps provides a comprehensive solution for managing your requirements, builds, tests, and issues. The Kanban board features cards that enable users to easily monitor the quality of their requirements. By automatically tracking bugs related to tests and builds, you can effectively gauge the quality of your requirements and builds, ensuring a robust development process.

4. Integrated Analytics

The Analytics service delivers data that feeds into pre-built reports, widgets that can be customized for dashboards, and reports that can be created using Power BI. For human and automated testing, data monitors the status and trends of the test plans.

Test analytics provide almost real-time visibility into test results for builds and releases. Teams can use this information to improve test collateral and support the upkeep of healthy pipelines.

5. Flexible platform

To integrate with and expand Microsoft Azure DevOps, you can mix the technologies and tools you already know with the development tools that work best for you. Create extensions that offer the experience you require for your test management lifecycle using the REST APIs and contribution mechanism offered by the Test platform.

How Do Test Plans Function?

Google receives thousands of queries each month asking how ADO testing operates. One explanation could be that most teams utilize in-house, proprietary testing-specific technologies not part of ADO Test Plans.

Understanding the terminology used in ADO Test Plans is important before learning how they function. Microsoft Azure Test Plans provide three different categories of test management artifacts:

– Test Plan: A test plan is a compilation of settings, test cases, and test suites that can be organized into shared test stages and configured with parameters. Test plans can include different types of test suites such as static test suites, requirement-based test suites, and query-based test suites.

– Test Suite: A test suite is a collection of test cases that are designed to cover various scenarios as part of a broader test strategy. Grouping test cases within a test suite makes it easier to track the progress of completed scenarios.

– Test Case: A test case is a defined set of steps or procedures used to verify specific sections of code or application deployment. Test cases allow you to test the functionality and compliance of your code with client and business requirements. Test cases can be created as part of a test strategy even without creating a test suite.

Tricks for Microsoft Azure Test Plans:

– Test case bulk import/export via CSV file

Select a module from the available test suites within the test plans, and then use the up and down arrows to import and export test cases. The test case’s tile, autogenerated ID, test phases, priority, expected results, assigned to, and path are displayed in the files. The exported file can be modified to add or modify test cases or stages before reloading for use. You can also set custom values or priorities to filter the test cases. During upload, it checks for required columns, and any missing columns are highlighted for easy fixing.

-Configurations

Choose several settings, such as different browsers, Google Chrome, and the current Windows system. Assignment to a test plan, a specific test suite, or even individual test cases can be done. Add settings first, then test suites. The provided test cases will be automatically repeated for each setup.

-Shared Steps

Repeated steps from numerous test cases can be generated and shared. This lets you use the shared steps in any Azure Test plan test case. It contains all the actions that must be performed for a specific phrase, such as logging in.

A test case can include shared steps as well as other action items. Shared steps will also appear in the list of work items with the name you gave them, for example, Login Shared.

-Grid View

The test cases have two views at a high level: list view and grid view. You can launch a grid view from each suite, which displays all test cases and associated procedures. Copy and paste the new test cases from the excel sheet into the grid. The columns should all be the same size. The Azure DevOps grid view makes creating multiple test cases simple.

Conclusion

Microsoft Azure DevOps for Agile is a comprehensive toolset that seamlessly integrates with other management solutions, enabling continuous integration and deployment. With DevOps, you can effectively manage Azure Test Plans for each project within your organization. This promotes transparency and facilitates discussions on the status of the development lifecycle, enhancing the overall image of the organization.
