Question About CRM

Out of curiosity, under which discipline does CRM fall into exactly? I took databases and knowledge management classes during my masters study. I have a degree in Libraries and Information Studies. I'm very interested in data management and I get a serious kick out of organizing data and information. I can do it for hours and it makes me happy, but I'm still a little confused over where it falls into exactly.

For freelancers for example, how would someone go about learning the trade? I'm not interested in designing databases, although probably knowing basics helps to manage databases. My brain is more wired on strategies, coding, organizing, generating structures, taxonomies…etc. more than coding and the technical side.
