Where does MS Dynamics CRM 365 store its data??

This might be a stupid question, but I've looked everywhere and cannot find the answer. What I want to know is that all these entities, fields and records that are being created – where are they stored? SQL Server? Or does Microsoft CRM have its own db setup?

Also, is there a different db set up for Online vs On Premise versions?
