Switching an Azure AD-joined device without using Intune
Microsoft MVP Sander Berkouwer writing on The Things That Are Better Left Unspoken, took a look at the rising popularity of Azure AD Join to create a trust relationship between Identity and Windows 10 devices. From time to time, it helps to be able to switch AD-joined devices to a different person and it’s even possible to do that without relying on Intune or a third-party mobile device management solution.
To get underway with repurposing, users need to specify a new AD Device object and provide admin privileges to the new device owner. This involves the userPrincipalName attribute and device name and running a simple script with PowerShell. Starting a device doesn’t automatically assign ownership. Instead, users need to sign in with AD credentials, update advanced system settings and run an elevated Command Prompt, deleting the user profile of the previous owner.
