Microsoft Dynamics AX and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365FO) experts had a lot to say in 2019. Part of the focus remained on the current on-prem customer base, made up of tens of thousands of organizations running their businesses on older ERP technology that represents a decade or more of investment and business operations. At the same time, the latest features of the Microsoft business application stack and the promise of Azure services have proved irresistible, as MSDW contributors from around the world demonstrated this year.

In selecting the best articles of the year from our expert authors, the themes ranged from product features to forward looking technology trends to industry opportunities.

It seemed like the more Peter Joeckel explored the topic of upgrading or migrating Dynamics AX systems to Dynamics 365, the bigger the topic became. What started on solution architecture soon expanded to product management, add-on solutions, Azure, FastTrack, SMBs, and even the threat of competing ERPs. Early on in the series, Joeckel pondered the way ERP buyers were selecting their deployment model.

The biggest surprise for me in discussing the upgrade from Microsoft Dynamics AX to Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (D365FO) with multiple clients and potential clients is not that to-date everyone has decided to go the cloud, but rather that everyone wanted to engage on a detailed analysis of the options available to them: cloud, on-premises, and hybrid.

The second major surprise for me was that these sophisticated debates were often tossed out the window because of some minor “inconvenience” in the on-premises approach.
