There are some products which have special storage requirements in a warehouse and movement of such products is restricted to specific zones and/or bins.

Scenario: Let’s say you have an item – WRB-White Roasted beans that has special requirement of cold storage throughout the warehouse cycle from inbound to outbound process.

To address this in Business Central, you can use warehouse class code to tag such items.

This warehouse class code can be assigned to items, bins, and zones to control where different item classes are stored.

Setup:

In this example, we are using the same zone with different item class codes. Below are the steps for configuration.

Item Card:

Assign the Warehouse Class Code to the item having cold storage requirements.

Location Card:

Enable the Check Warehouse Class field so it is checked.

Zone/Bin:

Setup Warehouse Class Code for specific bin(s) in the Receive Zone.

Setup Warehouse Class Code for specific bin(s) in the Pick Zone.

Setup Warehouse Class Code for specific bin(s) in the Bulk Zone.

Setup Warehouse Class Code for specific bin(s) in the Shipping Zone.

Process:

Receive Purchase Order.

When you create a warehouse receipt, the system gives a warning about special warehouse handling required, due to which the bin code is left blank on the line.

If you select a bin that does not have the Cold Warehouse Class Code, the system will give an error.

Select W-08-0003 which has the warehouse bin class code Cold (as assigned to the item) and then post the receipt, which will create a put-away if use put-away worksheet field on location card is disabled on Location card.

Create Put-away:

The put-away suggests the place bin that has Warehouse Class Code as Cold (corresponding to that on Item card).

If you select any other bin with a different of blank Warehouse Class Code on the place line, it will not allow.

Register the put-away and review the bin contents which now shows the updated quantity in bin with Warehouse Class Code.

Movement to a bin with a blank or other Warehouse Class Code:

From the movement worksheet, if you try to move this item from bin W-03-0001 to W-01-0001 (which does not have Warehouse Class code), the system will not allow as you can only move to bin with same class code.

Create Sales order:

When you create warehouse shipment, the system warns about the item having special warehouse handling and that the bin would need to be selected.

Select a bin with a blank or a Warehouse Class Code (COLD) not matching with item would give error on shipment line.

When you update the bin having the Warehouse Class code (COLD), it is accepted as a bin code

Create pick:

The pick is suggested with the place bin being the W-09-0003 with the class as COLD. This will ensure that the warehouse personnel will take and place the items in the designated area.

Register the pick and post the Shipment:

The warehouse personnel can post shipment once the items are shipped through the respective shipping carrier.

This way you can control the movement of the product to cold storage zones/bins throughout the warehouse cycle.

In conclusion, controlling the movement of frozen or hazardous products in a warehouse is crucial for ensuring compliance with storage requirements and maintaining product integrity. By utilizing warehouse class codes in Business Central, items can be efficiently managed from inbound to outbound processes. This system helps prevent errors by restricting products to appropriate zones and bins, providing warnings, and enforcing proper handling throughout the warehouse cycle. Implementing these controls not only streamlines operations but also ensures that special-handling items are stored and shipped under the right conditions, enhancing overall warehouse management.
