Best CRM for Sales with strong API access

We fell into the Hubspot trap. Every time I want to automate something I hit a paywall and as an SMB we're not able to afford it.

I'm looking a CRM that has the same basic functionality for Sales but has a very good API to connect with other tools for everything else via MAKE, Zapier etc.

Has anyone been through the same journey and could offer some advice, on the sheer number or CRM products out their is nutssss
