Create Dynamics 365 Workflows with the New Power Automate “Describe it to Design it” Feature

At Catapult, we’re big fans of Power Automate. It’s been a powerful tool to help us enhance our clients’ Dynamics 365 solutions. So when we heard the news of the new natural-language processing feature called “Describe it to Design it”, we were excited to see how easy it would be for our customers to create their own workflows on the fly.

You can think of it as ChatGPT for Power Automate. It can interpret your requests to create workflows automatically, without technical knowledge or any need to write code. It opens the door to a whole new class of users, allowing them to make their everyday processes more productive without having to wait for IT to get around to it. One simply describes what they need done, and Power Automate produces a solution.

We gave it a test drive and had some great results. Here’s how it works:

“Describe it to Design it” Step-by-Step

First, open Power Automate at flow.microsoft.com. Select New > Describe it to Design it.

Second, tell Power Automate what you would like it to do in plain English. As an example, let’s try asking for a notification when a case is created in CRM.

After processing your request, Power Automate will suggest both a trigger and subsequent actions for you:

Third, click “Next” to customize the generated workflow. In this case, you can select a recipient for the notification message in Teams, and add a description.

Finally, click “Create Flow” to finish configuring the workflow and put it into action.

That’s it! Describe it to Design it really works!

Reduced Barrier-to-Entry for Workflow Beginners

We can see great potential for this new Power Automate feature. Users with limited technical skills can accomplish many simple tasks quickly and easily. It makes great strides to provide an intuitive experience, bringing Power Automate to the masses.

However, that’s not to say you can retire your workflow experts just yet. Describe it to Design it is not yet ready for complex workflows. If you want more control over your automation routines, or have very specific requirements, you’ll still need to resort to the traditional workflow creation methods.

Still, it’s very useful for new and experienced Power Automate users, letting you quickly create simple workflows and stay productive. It’s also a great learning tool, showing new users by example how to structure workflows properly.
