Power BI pros share their thoughts on migrating Azure Analysis Services to Power BI Premium User, evaluation containers, and preventing breaking changes.

Migrating Azure Analysis Services to Power BI Premium User

Writing on Four Moo, Gilbert Quevalliers delved into the process of migrating from Azure Analysis Services to Power BI Premium User (PPU), looking closely at how PPU scales. A standard tier is geared to mission critical production apps with elastic user concurrency. Pricing can rack up quickly, and it is limited to a model size of 100 GB. PPU by contrast offers 100 GB per user or 400 GB per capacity.

Refresh consumes additional memory with Azure Analysis Services, and the total memory used by all datasets is loaded into memory limiting datasets to 100 GB with S3 or Power BI Premium P3. PPU offers a much more flexible per individual allocation of 100 GB. He wrote:

PPU is a superset of Analysis Services, where it can not only scale very well, but has the additional features like aggregations, composite DirectQuery Models, Incremental refreshing, and more features available in PPU. This translates to me, that PPU will be able to scale if the model size increases, or the number of users increase.
