Today is the day to find the time to read your favorite book or to start the book you’ve wanted to read.

It’s important to recognize how books have influenced our entire lives. They’ve inspired us and shaped who we are today, which is why World Book Day is more than a well-deserved holiday. It’s a day to celebrate the magic of books and to encourage young people to read.

With that in mind, try to find time today to indulge in a cozy spot and a great book!

The History of World Book Day

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established World Book Day on April 23rd, 1995, to honor readers, authors, illustrators, and books worldwide.

UNESCO chose April 23rd as the official date of World Book Day to memorialize the deaths and births of prominent authors, including Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and Ince Garcilaso de la Vega. Despite World Book Day being a global event, some countries celebrate it on different days. For example, the United Kingdom and Ireland celebrate it every first Thursday in March.

World Book Day celebrates and recognizes the books and authors who came before us and those who have yet to be published. Books have built a bridge between generations and cultures, which is why it’s essential to continue encouraging young people to read.

You can celebrate World Book Day by making time to read, recommending your favorite book to friends and family, or reading with your kids. No matter how you choose to celebrate, make sure it’s an educational and enjoyable experience for you and everyone you love.

As Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay said, “Books have the unique ability to both entertain and to teach. They are at once a means of exploring realms beyond our personal experience through exposure to different authors, universes, and cultures, and a means of accessing the deepest recesses of our inner selves.”
