( votes)During the times of a global crisis such as the recent COVID – 19 outbreak, work from home, (WFH) as it is commonly abbreviated, has become a norm. The intensity has aggravated after national leaders of almost every country have declared a complete lockdown. If you look at the IT industry in India, then according to the Business Insider Report, about 18-20 lakh employees are expected to work from home. This has caused managers and their subordinates to work from outside the office for an indefinite period.
Although companies often mention the policies guiding work-from-home in their contracts, they do not provide extensive training to make employees comfortable when such a situation arises. This article throws light on how managers can deal effectively with their remote employees and keep the company on a steady pedestal.
4 Major Challenges of Remote Working
1. Difficulty in retrieving information
Lack of access to information is one of the biggest challenges of remote working. When a few or all members work as a geographically dispersed team, they find it difficult to:
● distribute information evenly
● access information at the same time
● communicate the context of the information
● comprehend the information
● decipher the meaning of silence

2. Not able to meet with your coworkers
Remote working is a good option for working parents, pregnant women, freelancers, or at times of crisis. But if it stretches for a longer period, it can seriously affect the productivity of your employees, especially of those who like to work in an office setting. Harvard Business Review research has shown that loneliness hits hard on those people who like to work in a collaborative environment. They often feel left out. They feel less belonging to their company and in worst cases can even think of quitting it.
3. No face-to-face interaction
As social animals, visual cues are very important for us. They make communication happen easily and quickly and trigger emotions to better understand the matter at hand. But a lack of face-to-face interaction acts as a stumbling block in this process. Supervisors often worry that employees won’t put their heart and soul into their work. On the other hand, employees fret that their managers won’t provide the required help in getting their work done.
4. There are a lot of distractions while working from home
Many people have a very hunky-dory image of work-from-home. Their vivid imagination compels them to think of scenarios where they could watch their favorite shows on Netflix, eat popcorn, sip cold drinks, and work alongside. But that is far from reality. People face countless troubles while working from their home, and the situation aggravates for working parents. Taking care of children often results in missing deadlines and meetings.
