( votes)Naming conventions have been thrown by the wayside. Gone are the days of “Dynamics GP 2019 R2”. Instead, Microsoft has chosen to go a different direction with their next GP update dubbing it “Microsoft Dynamics GP Next”. We can try and figure out what this name change means but first let’s look at the changes contained in the update due out in October 2019.
System Upgrades:

- Support for Windows Server 2019
- Support for Office 2019
- SmartList Date option
- Sort companies in User Access
- Search option in User Access
- Filter out Inactive users in User Access Setup
- More than 32 Report Options in Report Group

Now that is a lot of change and enhancement, but it should be expected with any Microsoft upgrade. Now down to the naming convention. Could Microsoft Dynamics GP Next mean that they are starting the end life of the software? Not likely. Microsoft still supports Microsoft Solomon which is older than Great Plains. What it may show us is that the update cadence may slow down. By calling it “Next” it gives Microsoft the flexibility to roll out fewer updates and focus on Dynamic Business Central, it’s latest cloud offering.
