Martin Fahrnberger
Managing Partner at ORBIS Austria GmbH

Starting with Connect Bridge

The Managing Partner at ORBIS Austria GmbH, Martin Fahrnberger, sat down with us and revealed that he first heard of Connecting Software back in 2010, directly from Thomas Berndorfer, our CEO. Both Martin and Thomas were in Vienna, Austria, at the time, and both participated in Microsoft events regularly. During one of their discussions, Thomas introduced the concept of Connect Bridge – a powerful integration platform that makes integrating different business applications much easier.

”We originally started with Connect Bridge to build some SAP and CRM document integration because the goal was to get data from SAP and CRM into the SharePoint”, Martin Fahrnberger explains. Using Connect Bridge meant saving time, resources, and reducing debugging and maintenance efforts, given there was no need to design an integration solution from the ground up.

Then, Connecting Software developed this concept further by building specific products that solved specific problems, which lead to a wide range of out-of-the-box solutions. In turn, one of them accurately solved an issue commonly faced by ORBIS’ customers.

The issue with Dynamics Documents in SharePoint

Being a leading Dynamics 365 implementation partner, ORBIS commonly comes across customers who wish to integrate their CRM system with SharePoint as their preferred location to store CRM-related documents. Although the integration of both Microsoft products was not complicated, a problem arose. Customers were surprised to see that the security roles and permissions were not transferred automatically to SharePoint.  “You could configure permissions manually, which is obviously not efficient or practical,” Martin Fahrnberger points out. When faced with a very intricate permission model in Dynamics, users will naturally want to have these same permissions on the Dynamics documents stored in SharePoint.

This scenario is precisely the one that CB Dynamics 365 to SharePoint Permissions Replicator, an out-of-the-box solution, tackles. It is entirely based on the Connect Bridge platform, a fact that end-users are not aware of. “It’s basically plug-and-play and solves the issue,” Martin Fahrnberger summarizes.

This solution is also useful for companies that have their Dynamics documents in SharePoint and “feel the need to have a higher level of compliance”, Martin Fahrnberger continues. Given the ever-growing attention that is given to Data Privacy, and the many privacy-related regulations like GDPR/DSGVO or CCPA, which demand a company to know which employees have access to documents containing personal data, when in a scenario where the company has already set adequate permissions on the Dynamics side, Martin asks “Why would users not want to have the same detailed permission level on the documents that are connected to Dynamics?”.

Connecting Software’s CB Dynamics 365 to SharePoint Permissions Replicator ensures that permissions in SharePoint perfectly match the ones in Dynamics, and remain synchronized.

Closing thoughts

Having used our solution in an array of customers and scenarios over the years, you might be asking yourself how ORBIS SE feels about it. Martin Fahrnberger sees it as a “convenient and practical solution” both for smaller and larger enterprise customers. He also reinforces the solution’s ease of use. “It is a SaaS component if you want to, but you have the complexity, if you need it. You can run it in an Azure environment where you can match every little detail as a customer.”

And, given that Microsoft itself recommends resorting to partners, Martin concludes by saying “While we may have been able to build a similar functionality internally, I’m happy to have followed that recommendation and to have put our trust in Connecting Software. Their dedication to customer success and reaction time with any of our requests is outstanding and the quality of their products makes the make-or-buy decision a no-brainer!
